About Obedience
At Fred's Pass our Pet Dog Obedience training classes are divided into Beginners and Advanced. At the end of the Intermediate class your dog should come, stay, walk on a loose lead, sit, drop and retrieve. Our methods are purely positive rewards based training and we are confident that we can teach you to train your dog, to the level you need. There is no limit to what you can achieve at Fred's Pass, be it a polite pet or a competition companion. We are happy to help you in any direction and as far as you like!
Registration for classes is mandatory as places are limited. Please email us via our contacts page or call 0417 773 095 to reserve your place and complete the on-line membership application form.
The first Tuesday of every month is our intake night and it is also
a dog-free handler only information night. Please leave your dog at
home on the first night so you can relax and listen to the club rules,
explanation of the training technique, demonstration of the training
technique and question time
Beginners Class
Beginners class is open to all young dogs who are fully vaccinated (usually 16 wks) and any dog of any age that has no or little obedience training.
This class is for dogs which have had little
or no training and for puppies which have
had all their vaccinations (C5) - usually
about 16 weeks of age. If you have a younger
puppy, or one who has not yet all his "needles",
we recommend you enroll him at a Puppy Pre-school
class. Talk to one of our Instructors for
more information. We will show you how to
prepare your dog for further training, and
you will learn how to teach him basic behaviours.
This class is an 8 week course on how to
teach him all the foundation behaviours required
of a well-adjusted, obedient canine companion.
In this class you will be taught to teach your dog how to:
- Walk on a loose lead
- Calming techniques
- Watch (Attention)
- Come
- Drop
- Sit & Greet
- Basic tricks
- Stay
You will then graduate into "Advanced" Class
Advanced class
Advanced Class is for the Beginner Graduate who wants some higher level training. This class introduces some beginning trial work and fun competition such as Rally O.
Commences at 7:00 pm
This class is ongoing and students work towards the "Positively Well Mannered Award"
This certificate is awarded to those students who are able to pass the assessment criteria
while using only positive training techniques and means you will graduate with a
well mannered and well adjusted member of the canine community.
What do I need to bring?
The tools required for positive training are:
- Plain flat collar or harness (no check chains);
- Regular flat webbing lead;
- Lots of treats;
- Lots of praise;
- Lots of enthusiasm; and
- A sense of humour - and don't forget your dog!
For your comfort & safety, please also remember these tips:
- Please leave your dog in the car while you 'check-in' and pay your fees;
- Take your dog for a 'toilet walk' before class, but be sure to pick-up after him - use 'poobags' & place in the bins provided;
- Wear comfortable clothes that you can sit on the grass in, and closed in shoes (runners preferably, no thongs/scuffs/bare feet.);
- "When it's raining, there's no training". Please call your Instructor or Club President to confirm when it looks "iffy", and discuss lessons to practice at home;
- Protect yourself from mosquitoes & "midgies", which can be very fierce;
- We provide water for dogs, but make sure you bring enough water for yourself;
- Bring along your current C5 vaccination certificate on the first night you join.
Obedience trial rules are available from the ANKC website (www.ankc.org.au)

At the Noonamah Horse and Pony Club grounds at Fred's Pass, Northern Territory, Australia.
Assuming you are travelling south from Darwin along the Stuart Highway:
- After you pass Coolalinga continue south for approximately 2.6 km;
- Then turn right onto Bees Creek Road;
- The Reserve is on the right hand side of Bees Creek Road so go about 200 metres then turn right and go through the gates of the Reserve;
- We are on the oval on the left side of the Reserve access road - about 50 metres along the access road - just look for a bunch of happy dogs and people.
