What do we do?
Our club is focussed on promoting responsible
dog ownership through education and training,
and the instruction you will receive here
will help you train your dog, using all positive
methods, to be a great companion, a well
behaved pet, and an enjoyable addition to
your household.
We train you to train your dog and conduct
pet dog manners and obedience training on Tuesday nights and agility training on Thursday nights from February through
to October.
In recent years our club has progressed to
adopt the all-positive reward based training
methods, and this is advocated in all our
classes, from beginners right through to
competition level. What this means is that
we are focussed on teaching and rewarding
a dog for correct or desirable behaviours
and ignoring the wrong or undesirable behaviour.
By focusing on what your dog is doing right
and helping him to know what that is, you
get your dog's cooperation and teach him
to want to please you. We have found that
this approach builds trust and a much stronger
bond than correction based methods.
The tools required for positive training
are a plain flat collar or harness, regular
flat webbing lead, lots of treats, lots of
praise, lots of enthusiasm and a sense of
humour!
We are affiliated with the North Australian Canine Association Inc (Dogs
NT), which is the Local Controlling Body member
of the Australian National Kennel Council (ANKC). What this means, in a nutshell, is that
our Club is able to hold sanctioned events,
such as obedience trials and agility &
jumping trials, where competitors can gain
qualifications towards ANKC recognised titles
for your dog. The instruction you receive
at our Club will help you on your way to
successfully compete at these events, so
if this is what you'd like to do, talk to
your instructor about what you need to do
to register yourself and your dog with the
Dogs NT. Freds Pass hosts several obedience
and agility trials throughout the year, see
our Schedules page for a full listing of dates and results.
